a Livermore Chiropractic web page, located on the web site planet chiropractic, was moved from one directory to another earlier today. Some may think that moving a web page, renaming a web page, and or deleting a web page, may be no big deal. It becomes a big deal when that web page is the number one ranked chiropractic web page for the community that the doctor is practicing in.
Planet Chiropractic was upgrading some directory structure which required moving a page featuring Livermore chiropractor, Dr. George Khoury, to a new directory on the same web site. The technicians at planetC1.com did some research and found that the Livermore page was ranked at the top of the list when it came to Google searches for particular chiropractic terms related to the doctor’s web page. They didn’t want to just move the page to another directory, which would result in a page not found error (404) when someone found the old page via a search engine. To insure that the page could still be visited, the web sites technicians set up a 301 permanent redirect so that all queries for the old page would lead directly to the new chiropractic page, which resided in a different directory.
301 permanent redirects are great feature and they can be set up very quickly (especially if you’re using cPanel or some other web-based server interface), allowing you to keep your web site visitors (and the search engines) happy. After the 301 redirect was set up, the planet chiropractic tech crew went back to the search engines to check and see how well the page would perform. While the page did lose its page rank (a measurement Google uses for page popularity) there were no 404 page not found errors or broken links. Typically, the page rank (PR) appears on the new page fairly soon, as it often gets transferred from the old page to the new. The new page is in a directory that has a stronger PR value so it may up being even higher than it was previously.
The page now lives here: Livermore Chiropractor
You can access the city chiropractic directory here: PC1Directory
The information here is provided to help others gain a better understanding as to how web pages work and what tools can be used to improve how they are presented online. The above content (related to 301 redirects and 404 errors) pertains to nearly all web sites, and not just those being developed for chiropractic office use.
